Feeling Lucky?

Is there really such thing as good or bad luck?  A friend of mine and I were discussing this the other day.  He was commenting on someone’s success and attributed him as just being “lucky”.  Personally, I am not so sure luck (bad or good) exists.  I choose to believe things happen for a reason.  I believe that we are part of a divine plan.  However, I also believe we influence our circumstances by our thoughts and actions.  In other words, we are attracting things to us, whether we are aware of it or not.  We are the summation of our thoughts in life. Basically, I believe that I am where I am today because of God’s will, coupled with my beliefs, thoughts, actions, hard work and perseverance, not luck.

We are all born with a set of circumstances that is out of our control.  Some people are born into this world with a silver spoon in their mouth, with everything they could possibly could ever want.  Are they lucky?  How about the ones born into poverty?  Are they unlucky?  If you feel that being wealthy is lucky and being poor is unlucky, then I suppose you might say that.  However, our initial circumstances influence us, but do not define us.  What we choose to do with our set of circumstances is up to us.  We have all heard the stories of people who go from rags to riches, and for that matter, riches to rags.  You will probably agree that most of the time the people who rise from poverty do so by hard work and perseverance, not luck.  The ones who lost everything probably did so as a result of their thoughts and actions, not bad luck.

While I realize that there are many different opinions and some people do believe in luck.  However, in business, you are better off not relying on luck to succeed.  My advice is to understand and implement the following:

Opportunities are always present.  Look for them and take advantage of them.  If you miss one, keep your eyes and ears open for another one….it is probably right in front of you!

Recognize and use your talents!  We are all blessed with talents and gifts.  Do you think an athlete that makes millions of dollars a year is lucky?  Do you think luck made him into the athlete that he is, or that luck helps him succeed on the field?  Sure, he may be fortunate that he was gifted with coordination, speed or stature and lives in a society that pays big bucks to professional athletes, but I think you will agree that he had to work pretty hard and practice, practice, practice to get good enough for the big leagues.  Think about your gifts.  How can you use them to help your business!

Don’t give up!  Some people simply give up too early and call it bad luck.  A great example of perseverance is the life of none other than our 16th president, Abraham Lincoln.  Take a moment to read his bio if you are not familiar with it.  Then, imagine if he gave up too early.  Often, the only difference between failure and success is the one who failed gave up too soon and the one who succeeded kept going, sometimes just one minute more.

The Law of Attraction.  This phenomenon occurs whether we are aware of it or not.  Be careful of what you think about.  Your thoughts are constantly attracting things to you, so focus on what you want, not what you do not want!

Someone once said, “Luck is a loser’s excuse for not having a winner’s position.”

Here’s an idea:  instead of being envious of a person’s so-called “luck”, recognize and cultivate your talents, look for and seize opportunities, focus on what you want, and whatever you do………DO NOT GIVE UP!
